The Kardelen Turkish Dance Ensemble was founded in Washington, DC in 2005 by a number of individuals who are dedicated to promoting the diverse, rich and vibrant culture of Turkey through its dances. Kardelen’s dances provide a glimpse into the lives and celebrations of the Turkish people and take audiences on a cultural journey through the villages of Asia Minor, or Anatolia as Turks call it, to the royal Ottoman palaces of Istanbul.
The Ensemble takes its name from a resilient Anatolian mountain flower. The word “kardelen” means “one that pierces through the snow”. The Kardelen flower, similar to a crocus, survives under hardship and severe weather circumstances.
While the primary purpose of Kardelen is to increase the awareness of the Turkish culture, members are also committed to working for the broader community, and therefore donate a portion of revenues to various organizations who are engaged primarily in the education and healthcare of underprivileged children, who are trying to survive under difficult circumstances just like the Kardelen flower.

May Kesler is a physical therapist, massage therapist, dancer and choreographer.
I am available for choreography using ballet, modern, and improvisational genres. I am also a Certified Rommett Floor-Barre teacher and am available to teach classes.
I use my knowledge from physical and massage therapy to teach alignment, stretch and strength. My personal choreography is based on available and natural movement, using written and spoken words, or emotional experiences. I have also choreographed for locally produced shows such as "Fiddler on the Roof" and "British Music Hall". I was the movement director for "Creeps" an off Broadway show about a group of men with CP. I taught the actors to move as if they had Cerebral Palsy. Classes offered: Currently: "Preparing for Multi-Disciplinary Work
We will begin to explore a full range of creative expression. We'll play with improvisational exercises to ignite the imagination and access emotions. I am interested in firing up confidence in our many human facets so that we, as performers, are awake and able to play with whatever direction we're given. This class will help develop collaborative skills, so that each performer can then bring a readiness, a combination of physicality, intellect and a fully engaged imagination to each creative process."
