Jayne Bernasconi - Artistic Director

With its roots in modern dance, gymnastics and circus performance, aerial dance is an innovative art form that was pioneered in the late 1960s by Terry Sendgraff. Since its inception, aerial dance has developed its own movement vocabulary and has grown to include over 25 dance companies in the US alone. Though similar at first glance, aerial dance differs from circus performance in two key ways. Aerial dance is low-flying and provides endless opportunities for partnering between grounded and flying dancers and whereas circus trapeze is rigged from two points and swings back and forth, aerial dance apparatus is hung from a single point of attachment, adding dimension of circular flight. This connection between ground and air in a circular flow of movement is what defines aerial dance and makes it so unique to watch.

Dancing both secular and sacred traditions that have evolved in Cuba for centuries, the ensemble’s passionate and dedicated dancers, drummers and singers create an enthralling performance environment where stage, street and shrine converge. The company is led by Cuban-born dancer, drummer and all-around folklorist Oscar Rousseaux, a graduate of Cuba’s prestigious National School of Art Instructors and former dancer with one of Cuba’s premiere folklore troupes, Compañía Folklórica Cubana JJ. Contradiction Dance is a place where theatre meets dance meets pop-culture. My vision is to make dances that report on, reflect, and question the world in which we live. I have long believed that any performing art has a responsibility to be a mirror for society, engaging both the artists and audience members in a dialogue through the chosen medium. My mission is to foster discussion, reflection, and change through live performance and dance education. Contradiction Dance was created as a vehicle to achieve those goals. Dance is a necessary tool for communication drawing the map of societal relevance is part of the work before everyone in the dance field. For me, it's about welcoming all to this collection of ideas, supplying the right elements for accessibility, and getting out the way. Art finds it own path. - Kelly Mayfield

Crossroads Dance Project blends the ancient art of biblical Sacred Dance with the power and elegance of modern dance and ballet. Our mission is to touch the soul of every person who witnesses the glorious artistry which aims to bring revelation, healing and hope.
Crossroads Dance Project was founded in 1996 by Kathryn Eurich. CDP's five year run of the innovative performance “The Gift of the Nutcracker" was recognized by the Washington Post for using one of the most popular ballets to bring moral value and inspiration to their audiences during the Holiday Season. Children from Washington D.C.'s inner city program, The Darrell Green Foundation founded by Redskin's Darrell Green, were invited to perform with the company as well as other surrounding dance schools. Crossroads' past performances included the unique blending of folk dance with modern dance and ballet in their annual spring season concerts to bring "cerebral... and breathtaking" (The Washington Post) dance to the D.C. metropolitan area. Always a desire has been to incorporate themes of spirituality and faith to the dance. Today, CDP is still continuing to build a repertoire of creativity and beauty and truth. For a time such as this, Crossroads is devoting their time to create a new dance brought to an ancient art form. The splendor of this "new" Sacred Dance hopes to bring healing, revelation and hope to every soul who witnesses it.

“What you notice first about the dancers in Dancesmith are their arms. Not legs or feet or jaw-dropping flexibility but simply the relaxed, fluid way the dancers' arms move and the way this movement complements the music and focuses the eye. The works by Artistic Director Natalie Moffett Smith, whose small local troupe made its Kennedy Center debut Thursday at the Terrace Theater, are full of such pleasing details.
Moffett Smith's company, though only two years old, looks more mature and polished than some of the area's established groups, and this is because of an artful control of every facet of production. Lighting (by Lynn Joslin), costumes (by Judy Hansen), set design, even the sound quality of the recorded music -- too often a sour note in a dance concert -- were of exceptionally high caliber. Most rewarding of all, Moffett Smith's choreography bore the same stamp of meticulous attention, from feet to fingers.”  Washington Post – Sarah Kaufman

Mission:To challenge the audience's assumptions about the human experience through dance.
Company Bio:Dissonance Dance Theatre (DDTDC) was conceived as a project in 2005 after artistic director, Shawn Short, graduated from Howard University and started to work with the Washington Ballet. He felt there needed to be a performing ensemble that blended the modern styles of old (Horton, Graham, Limon) with nuances of classical Dance, Jazz and Hip-hop to create a fresh take on contemporary movement.
Shawn believed that this style could find a home in the Washington D.C. dance community, which has been a locale sensitive to the growing changes in dance that are shaping the 21st century.
DDTDC's name sprang from Shawn's desire to expand conventional notions about dance and push beyond stereotypes. DDTDC was designed to be a hub for dance artists who are focused on the creative process and artistic integrity. Our dancers strive to utilize dance and theatre convention to construct a narrative that is thrilling, uplifting, and challenging.
"The company is rooted in the black experience, but we hope to show you more about the human experience. We all face the same struggles and setbacks in life until we reach our final resting place." -Shawn Short

Kibism [kibizm] is a performance lab/unit formed by Naoko Maeshiba in 2002 in order to pursue her inquiry about the depth of the body, examine various forms of perception in search for the absolute essence, and further the interaction between different disciplines and cultures.
Kibism works start with the body. Exploring the body’s potentials as a place where the external and the internal stimuli encounter, as a vessel through which images germinate, as a landscape for memories and histories, we investigate the relationship between body and the various environments. Created through the collaborative process with the artists and the ensemble, Kibism works push and blur the boundaries in both content and form. The synthesis of kinetic, visual, auditory, and sculptural elements illuminate the rich layers of abstracted narrative rooted in primal and refined physicality. Thematically, Kibism works delve into the hidden and the obscured aspects of the society, unearth the ephemeral moments in life, and investigate the strange beauty (KIBI) of our existence on the universe. Past productions explored the crucial issues in our era: youth violence, displacement, have and have not, subliminal control, departure and arrival, traces in our bodies, home, and family.
Performance venues include: John F. Kennedy Center of Performing Arts (DC), Hirshhorn Museum at the Smithsonian Institute (DC), Theatre of Yugen Noh space (SF), Ko Festival of Amherst (MA), Dialog of Four Cultures Festival (Lodz, Poland), and Dance Hakushu (Hakushu, Japan). (www.naokibi.com)

Northeast Performing Arts Group’s Mission is to develop and foster the creative talents of youth in the Northeast/Southeast corridors of Washington, D.C. through performing and visual arts, as an alternative to street life and to teach them the invaluable lessons of discipline, commitment and team motivation.
History and Current Programs and Activities: Founded in 1979, Northeast Performing Arts Group (NEPAG) is a community-based 501(c) 3 organization that promotes youth development through the arts. Located in the northeast section of Ward 7 in the District of Columbia, NEPAG was created to offer DC youth, primarily East of the River, an array of positive alternatives to neighborhood crime and self-destructive behavior. Initially, NEPAG’s focus was performing arts training, which comprised classes in dance (ballet, modern, jazz, tap, African), drama and vocal instruction. Soon, it became evident that exposure of our young people to neighborhood violence and drugs was escalating. Additionally, the area’s dropout and youth unemployment rates were reaching alarming numbers. In response, founder, Rita Jackson, and the board of directors developed a holistic approach to provide services for at-risk children. They extended the performing arts program to include life skills training, planning, goal setting and academic support activities. To meet these needs, the N.E. Outreach Youth Center was formed to house all outreach service programs. The center and arts studio have evolved into a safe haven where children and youth can prepare for life while exploring the arts. Since inception, we have trained over 5000 youth and sent 200 to college. NEPAG targets its services to youth, ages 3 to 23, predominantly African American, residing primarily in Ward 7. Over the years, several of our youth have performed on Broadway; studied with the Alvin Ailey Dance Company; Dance Theatre of Harlem Residency; Debbie Allen Dance Academy and Debbie Allen’s productions at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Some have appeared in motion pictures and music videos. In the past five years NEPAG has evolved from a community based organization to a professional dance company. Recently, NEPAG’s professional dance company performed as the featured act for national recording artists Fantasia and Lil Mo’ at the Historic Black Family Reunion Celebration 2006. NEPAG has received numerous honors and citations from the National Endowment for the Arts; Center for Neighborhood Enterprise; Parents Magazine and the District of Columbia Commission on Arts and Humanities. TWe are recipients of the National Youth Services Award; Achievement Against the Odds Award and the 20th Mayors Arts Awards for Excellence in Service to the Arts (2005). NEPAG is a current nominee in the 2007 Mayor’s Arts Awards in two categories. TWe are also featured in the 2004/06 Catalogue of Philanthropy: A Guide to Giving.

The award-winning Silk Road Dance Company (SRDC) presents traditional and contemporary women's dances from the Middle East, Central Asia, and the Caucasus. Founded by Artistic Director Dr. Laurel Victoria Gray in 1995, the ensemble's performances offer a unique glimpse of the life, culture, and art of little known regions.
SRDC has won deep respect from the members of the communities represented by the company's repertoire. They were the first American dance ensemble to win an invitation to perform in Samarkand, Uzbekistan at the UNESCO-sponsored Sharq Taronalari International Festival; they were also the subject of a special on Uzbek television. Mujgan Ergil from Turkey created two new choreographies for the company in January 2007 -- a North Caucasus women’s dance and a Crimean Tatar chiftitelli.
In 2004, SRDC was the subject of a special broadcast by the Arab TV network Al Hurra. In April 2005, SRDC premiered Gray's major folkloric ballet, Haft Paykar: Seven Beauties, at the 2005 World Dance Showcase, sponsored by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission. VOA television has created two special programs on the ensemble. Several feature-length articles on SRDC have appeared in The World and I and Azerbaijan International magazines.

The vision of Tehreema Mitha Dance Company is a world where the social presence and commentary of a diverse generation of people is brought forth and communicated through classical Bharatanatyam and contemporary dance and music. Tehreema Mitha Dance Company is the only company in the World that presents Classical Bharatanatyam, Classical/Contemporary and Contemporary items following each other, in that order, within a full evening’s performance. Choreographer/dancer, Tehreema Mitha’s Classical items are different to the traditional Bharatanatyam. While adhering strictly to the athletic and demanding Kalakeshetra technique and framework, she has developed a specific style using North Indian music as accompaniment to this South Indian dance form. Moving away from Hindu Mythology, she imbues her choreography with universal themes of love and lore and issues that touch people personally. The Classical/Contemporary items use pure Classical technique in a modern multi-layered format; combining steps in new and surprising ways; approaching the whole use of space, open subject matter and interaction between dancers while on stage, in a totally fresh and unexpected manner. The music and costumes reflect this twist on the traditional. Tehreema Mitha’s Contemporary style is all her own. Breaking away from the strictures of the classical the movement is daring and dramatic and more direct. A variety of topics that touch on literature, science, philosophy and our everyday lives; the joys and complications, confusion and despair of our modern times form the subject matter of the dances.
