About Dance/MetroDC

Our Mission

Dance/MetroDC provides resources, promotion, and collaborative opportunities for the dance community in the metropolitan DC area. We define the metropolitan area as Washington, D.C., Montgomery and Prince Georges Counties in Maryland, Fairfax County, Arlington County and the City of Alexandria in Virginia.
Dance/MetroDC is a nonprofit branch office of Dance/USA, the national service organization for professional dance. Dance/MetroDC was established in response to a sustained need for leadership and centralized services to strengthen professional dance in the DC metropolitan area. Project activities have focused on advocacy, professional development and information resources. Envisioned as a resource for dancers, choreographers, teachers and others, Dance/MetroDC is strategically positioned to be both proactive and reactive, balancing institutional structure and flexibility to gather and disseminate vital information, convene individuals and groups around key issues, facilitate networking, and stimulate grassroots political activity. Long-term goals include creating an environment for dance in the DC metropolitan area that is stable, inclusive and broadly accessible both within and beyond the dance field.

Yillah
Yillah's distinct approach to Oriental Dance (Raqs Sharqi) is rooted in a disciplined ballet background, a love of percussion, and the flirtatious rhythms of her Brazilian culture. The result is snaky and passionate belly dance that echoes Bolshoi, samba, and the old-school cabaret artists whom she emulates. A popular instructor, performer, and choreographer, Yillah is founder and artistic director of U Street Caravan, a local Middle Eastern dance company known as well for its Egyptian repertoire as for its unique hip-hop fusion work.
